Today we're testing a viral video that claims dipping sea shells in vinegar over night will turn them to glass. We're testing that out along with a few other acids.

If you really want to debunk viral video's then dunk natural condition/situations that can be shown through physically re-creating it with science (P,C,M,B,etc )/numbers

Hmmm, interesting. Maybe coating the shells with silicon dioxide and sodium. Under precise temperature, pressure, and time, could tranmutate the calcium carbonate into silicon dioxide? Then sweat the impurites with heat without compromising the structure?

You can use shells to make cement. Bake them in a fire, then pour water on them. Cool reaction, gets hot.

The big shells don’t dissolve because calcium carbonate act as a base. It neutralises acid... so maybe the bigger shells don’t dissolve that much because they have completely neutralise the vinegar...

First of all, for anyone who knows chemistry, you can't turn calcium carbonate which shells are primarily made of, into silicate which what glass is primarily made of. The other material, chitin, is less enduring and falls apart. I'm appalled at the state of people's knowledge of general physics, biology, and chemistry. I am 56 and am grateful for having the solid background that so few kids get these days. Don't get me wrong. It's great to experiment and see what happens, but, knowing your basic facts can go a long way to help save time and material.

My theory is that the one used in the video you looked at is glass or plastic that's shaped and painted to look like a shell. The vinegar simply took the paint off.

This is why ocean acidification is so dangerous for shellfish and coral reefs. Their shells will dissolve and leave them vulnerable to predation. Much of our oceanic ecosystem is dependent on these creatures interacting with each other and being key food resources for vertebrates. Without them, we will lose huge species diversity in the coral reefs and a decline fish population abundance due to the need for mature shellfish to be able to sustain reproduction rates.
